Frequently Asked Questions


  1. To register a new All-Terrain Vehicle. What do I need?
    a. Bill of Sale (always needed)
    b. Manufacture Statement of Origin (MSO)/Manufacture Certificate of Origin (MCO)
    c. Affidavit for unregistered or untitled All-Terrain Vehicles (if MSO/MCO is lost)

  2. How do I register a used All-Terrain Vehicle?
    a. Bill of Sale (always needed)
    b. Registration certificate from previous owner. There will be a $5.00 penalty if expried (out of state only).
    c. Title if titled
    d. Or if not registered or titled use Affidavit for unregistered or untitled All-Terrain Vehicles.

  3. How do I register an All-Terrain Vehicle that has never been registered?
    a. Bill of Sale (always needed)
    b. Affidavit for unregistered or untitled All-Terrain Vehicle.

  4. Requriements for bonding
    a. Bill of Sale (always needed)
    b. Photos of front, side, and back of machine
    c. Registered letter from previous owner
    d. Pencil rub of VIN number
    e. Application filled out
    f. Proof of bonding on form number 542-8092 of Iowa Statutory Surety Bond

  5. Liens and releases on ATV
    a. All liens must be signed off by county recorder before transferring

  6. Qualifications to register as an ATV
    a. ATV means a motorized floatation-tire vehicle with not less than threelow pressure tires, but not more than six low pressure tires, or a two-wheeled off-road motorcycle, that is limited in engine displacement to less than eight hundred cubic centimeters and in total dry weight to less than eight hundred fifty pounds and that has a seat or saddle designed to be straddled by the operator and handlebars for steering control.
    b. Motorcycle means every motor vehicle having a saddle or seat for the use of the rider and designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground including a motor scooter but excluding a tractor and a motorized bike.
    c. Motor Vehicle means a vehicle which is self propelled. Which includes: cars, trucks, motorcycles and tractors.

  7. Out of state ATV for transfer
    a. Bill of Sale (always needed)
    b. Registration (there will be a $5.00 penalty if expired)
    c. Title if titled
    d. Screen print of registration from state where machine was registered if there is no registration

  8. What do I need from E-Bay?
    a. Bill of Sale (always needed)
    b. Current Registration (out of state can be expired with $5.00 penalty)
    c. Title if titled
    d. Or if not registered or titled use Affidavit for unregistered or untitled All-Terrain Vehicles

  9. Farm units being used on multiple lands (miles apart) owned by a farmer.
    a. All ATVs must be trailored from farm to farm

  10. Farm units being transfered from farmer to farmer
    a. Bill of Sale (always needed)
    b. Registration (if used)
    c. Title if titled
    d. MSO/MCO (if new)
    e. Or if not registered or titled use Affidavit for unregistered or untitled All-Terrain Vehicle

Temporary Park Closures

Riverview OHV Park, located in Black Hawk County, is currently closed due to poor trail conditions and flooding caused by recent heavy rain fall.

Tama OHV Park, located in Tama County, is currently closed due to poor trail conditions caused by recent heavy rain fall.

Nicholson-Ford OHV Park, located in Marshall County, is currently closed due to poor trail conditions caused by recent heavy rain fall.

Lake View OHV Park, located in Johnson County, is currently closed due to poor trail conditions caused by recent heavy rain fall.

Gypsum City OHV Park, located in Webster County, is currently closed due to poor trail conditions caused by recent heavy rain fall
